What can one say!!!  You all are awe inspiring!!!  On January 19, we held a blood drive for Gabby Artus. As the saying goes, build it and they will come, and come you did in unbelievable numbers. The Blood Center thought we would do well if we had thirty-five people donate blood, excellent if we had fifty people. In fact, the lady coordinating the event thought fifty people was unrealistic.  They brought sixty bags with them if by chance there was a miracle and we had sixty people donate.  Well, little faith did they have in our community because we had sixty-two people come that night to donate. You did it again…you broke the mold for kindness and caring.  Thank you so much for being you over and over again. Please continue to pray for Gabby (she has started school with us last week) and her family as they fight this disease.

Tomorrow is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.  During mass, Father Sal will bless candles that the children may bring from home if they would like to do so.   On Friday, we will celebrate the Feast of St. Blaise with the Blessing of the Throats following our morning assembly in the gym.  Please join us for both of these ceremonies.

Our Children’s Bingo was a tremendous success. More than two hundred people enjoyed Bingo with us last Sunday. A great big thank you to Julie Green, Linda Moran, Kathy Ferret and the many volunteers that came to assist us for the afternoon.  Our Cheerleaders led our students who attended the Cheer Clinic on Saturday in a very entertaining intermission where the clinic attendees cheered and performed cheer stunts for us. Bikes were won by several students including Hayden Tubbs, Timmy Trimble, Anthony Micheu, and Abbey Bigner. Games and prizes were won by others including gift certificates to The Royal Sonesta’s Teddy Bear Tea,  Pay One Price Sessions for the rides at the Tomato Festival, and Seafood Dinner Certificates.

On Tuesday, February 14, 2012, the students may wear red accessories and a red blouse/shirt with blue jeans (no holes/no frays), socks and tennis shoes in honor of St. Valentine’s Day.

Please remember to share the good news about our school with your friends, family, and neighbors.  Tell them about our Open House for prospective (Pre Kindergarten Three Years Old to First Grade) students on Wednesday, February 15, 2012.    New student registration will be held on Monday, February 27, 2012, at 9:00 a.m. in the cafeteria.

On Friday, February 17, 2012, we will hold our annual Mardi Gras parade.  We will once again parade through the neighborhood.  We will exit the school grounds through the gates where we enter for morning arrival.  We will proceed down Montesquieu to Oak Place then left to Delille St. and return to Trist (time permitting we will go around twice) and reenter the school yard on Montesquieu.  Everyone marching will need beads and trinkets to throw.  Please ask your family and friends to line the parade route so that our children have someone to catch their beads. Leading our Mardi Gras Parade will be our Pre Kindergarten and Kindergarten students (wearing costumes). They will be pulled in wagons by their middle school buddies. Students (first through eighth) may wear blue jeans (no holes/no frays) with a Mardi Gras shirt/blouse and tennis shoes. All students marching will need to complete a field trip permission slip.  It is going to be a ROYAL day, so invite all your family and join in the fun on February 17, 2012, at 1:30 p.m.

Our Mardi Gras parade will be led by Queen Curstin Perez and King Keith DeJean.  Curstin and Keith will be followed by Dukes Jonah Smith and David Daughtry.  Jonah and David will escort Maids Victoria Sanders and Grace Morel. Congratulations to our 2011-12 Our Lady of Prompt Succor Royalty. Thanks to Ellen Doody, Cindy Reynolds, Joel Weibelt-Smith, and Bonnie Loposer for organizing this year’s Mardi Gras Parade.

Following the parade, we will host our annual Kiss A Critter Contest.  The teacher with the most money will Kiss A Critter.  So students and parents, support your favorite teacher by sending your change (or dollar bills) to fill your favorite teacher’s jar.  Our teachers are practicing their pucker so they can Kiss A Critter.  The Critter will be announced at the time of the kissing. Proceeds from this year’s Kiss A Critter will be given to The Artus Family to help defray the cost of Gabby’s treatments.

If you are planning to check your child out of school following Kiss A Critter, please do so with their homeroom teacher.  There will be no aftercare on Friday, February 17, 2012. Also, we will need assistance with cleaning the streets of trinkets, beads, and any trash that we might have dropped.  St. Bernard Parish has adopted an ordinance that states you can only obtain a permit to parade the following year if you clean the area in which you have paraded.  Please help us to keep St. Bernard clean by meeting at the gate along Trist Street following Kiss A Critter and help us to clean the area in which we paraded.
