Our Lady of Prompt Succor School was founded in 1952. The school started as a 5 classroom school and modern church with a capacity of 400. The growth of the parish was rapid. From the first school numbering 126 pupils, to an evolving elementary school in 1963, with 1,340 pupils and 27 classrooms.
In 1997, the school was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, under the direction of the principal, Mrs. Evelyn M. Kingston. She presided over 700 students and almost 60 faculty and staff members until 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devasted St. Bernard Parish.
